Zika virus can be transmitted through:

  • Mosquito bites: Zika virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito species.
  • Through sexual intercourse: Zika virus can spread through sex from an infected partner even if that infected partner doesn’t show the symptoms at the time. Zika virus can remain in the semen longer than any other body fluids. CDC is still studying to confirm the lifespan of the virus staying in semen.
  • Through blood transfusion: there are confirmed cases of Zika virus transmission in Brazil but not in the US yet.
  • From mother to her fetus: An already Zika-virus infected pregnant woman can pass the virus to her fetus during the pregnancy or around the time of birth.
